About our Flag Staff



 Our flag staff was found buried deep in mud at Gillwell Park (Chingford, United Kingdom) by one of our Assistant Scoutmasters while doing a service project there in 2003.  Camp staff generously consented to allow him to keep it.  It's old, but we do not know how old.  That the camp director at Gilwell Park could not recall ever seeing one quite like it suggests that goes back some years.  The metal is pitted and marred in many spots, its general condition reflective of a long history.  As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this to be a remarkably fine piece.  It is, perhaps, the romantic in us all that would have us believe that Sir Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell might have even gazed upon it at one time!

An identical radiator mascot occupies the place of pride on the Rolls Royce radiator of "Jam Roll", the Rolls Royce that was presented to Lord Baden Powell by the Scouts of the World at the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in 1929.  Rather than having the typical "Sprit of Ecstasy" (The Flying Lady) the Scouts had a custom-designed mascot made and installed that incorporates the Scout arrowhead and Scout motto "Be Prepared".  You can read more about "Jam Roll" and see photos or the car, including one of the unique radiator mascot, by visiting the link provided here.

Our flag staff has been loaned to the Troop by Mike Nostrand for our use indefinitely, exacting a single proviso; "Should it ever be deemed that it is to be replaced -- for what ever reason -- it should, at that time, be returned to me."
